MEPs argue for need for 2022 budget to support pandemic recovery

On Monday 11 October MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgets gave their reasons for proposing increased funding for Horizon Europe (research), Erasmus+, health, climate and humanitarian aid (see EUROPE 12800/21).

The MEPs endorsed (with 33 votes in favour, 2 against and 5 abstentions) the report by Karlo Ressler (EPP, Croatia) and Damian Boeselager (Greens/EFA, Germany) which accompanies the budgetary amendments on the EU's 2022 draft budget plan.

The MEPs stress that the EU’s 2022 budget should support the recovery from the Covid-19 crisis, boost investment, tackle unemployment, and lay the foundations for a more resilient and sustainable Union.

Parliament as a whole will vote on Wednesday 20 October on its position amounting to €171.8 billion in commitment appropriations, an increase of €2.7 billion compared to the Commission’s draft budget plan (€172.3 billion in payment appropriations).

The plenary vote will be the starting point for three weeks of conciliation with the Council with the aim of reaching an agreement between the two institutions in time for next year’s budget to be voted on by Parliament and signed by its President at the second November plenary session (22-25 November). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
