On Tuesday, 12 October, the Council of Europe published an analysis of the implementation of the Istanbul Convention in Slovenia, a country where it notes positive developments in the fight against domestic violence but points out shortcomings in the fight against sexual violence and the protection of women from socially vulnerable groups.
For the “Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence” (GREVIO), the latter should receive more attention, which requires better data collection and a stronger criminal justice response.
GREVIO emphasises that the fight against rape, stalking, forced marriage, forced abortion, and forced sterilisation as well as [female] genital mutilation should receive more funding and political support; it also encourages the Slovenian authorities to continue to invest in the education sector so as to ensure early intervention, including in the online environment.
Also advocated is the integration of the principles of gender equality, the fight against [gender-related] stereotypes, and the right to personal integrity into the official school curriculum.
