04/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The chair of the Renew Europe group, Romania’s Dacian Cioloș, sent a letter to MEPs of the group, on Saturday 2 October, announcing his resignation. He was elected as the new president of the Romanian centre-right party USRPLUS (with a solid majority of 86.5%) in an online vote of party members. A “surprise”, he said. His aim now is to prepare for the European, presidential, local and parliamentary elections all to be held in 2024. A presidency meeting is expected to be held on Monday evening. A meeting of the group’s bureau is scheduled for Friday, in order to organise elections for the leadership of the group “as soon as possible”, certainly next week, a source told us. The MEP Sophie In 't Veld (Netherlands) has already announced her interest in taking over as chair. The Spaniard Jordi Cañas is also said to be interested. (PH)
