04/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The NGO Greenpeace and other environmental organisations launched, on Monday 4 October, a European Citizens’ Initiative calling for a ban on all advertising or sponsorship in the European Union by companies selling fossil fuels, fossil fuel vehicles and fossil fuel flights or ferries. “Like the tobacco industry, fossil fuel polluters first denied the science and then tried to delay action. A ban on their advertising is a logical step to bring public debate and policy in line with science”, explained Greenpeace EU Climate and Energy Campaigner, Silvia Pastorelli. While the NGO hopes to collect at least one million signatures (a precondition for a response from the European Commission), it has also carried out, in parallel, an action to block a Shell oil refinery in the port of Rotterdam.
