Union for Mediterranean member states agree to step up efforts to tackle climate and environmental emergencies

04/10/2021 (Agence Europe)During a meeting in Cairo (Egypt) on Monday 4 October, the ministers of the 42 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) adopted a joint declaration in which they committed themselves to joining forces to achieve a balance between anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and their elimination as soon as possible in the second half of the century. In this declaration, the UfM countries highlight in particular their determination to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C, to fight against the loss of biodiversity, to reduce air pollution and to increase the adaptation capacity and resilience of the Mediterranean region. Chairing the meeting, the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for the Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, declared: “Today we have set a bold and ambitious vision for a clean, competitive, resilient and inclusive Mediterranean”.
