The European Commission published on Monday 4 October its roadmap for the revision of the roadworthiness package to improve vehicle safety in the EU.
The Commission considers that technological development and technical complexity have increased considerably and that the rules for vehicle inspections must therefore be adapted.
“Visual and mechanical vehicle inspections, which are still the predominant modes of inspection up to date, will progressively need to be complemented or even replaced by inspection modes that access vehicle status and operational data by means of the electronic vehicle interface”, the Commission stresses.
These new methods will be accompanied by an enhanced exchange of vehicle inspection data within the EU.
These will, according to the Commission, respond to reports from several Member States of difficulties in applying the rules when it comes to cross-border vehicle traffic and trade.
The revision of the roadworthiness package is part of the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, which should, among other things, make it possible to achieve the objective of zero deaths on the roads by 2050 (see EUROPE 12743/3).
