04/10/2021 (Agence Europe) – The international news channel Euronews is planning to shut down its Greek-language service due to a cut in EU subsidies, AFP reported on Thursday 30 September. The National Union of Journalists (SNJ) said, in a meeting summary consulted by EUROPE, that the channel’s management had announced the shutdown of the Greek subsidiary by 15 December. “The head of the union pointed out that the so-called ‘commercial’ language editions only exist if they are financed by the partners. He added that the discontinuation of the Greek language is a choice of the client, the European Commission”, underlined the SNJ. On Thursday, ESIEA, the Greek journalists’ union, expressed in a statement its total opposition to the decision. However, the closure is not irreversible, according to AFP. (AC)
