07/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 7 July, European and international trade unions (ETUC, IndustriAll, ITUC), employers (Ceemet, Clepa, ACEA) and NGOs(Transport & Environment, Just Transition Centre, European Climate Foundation) sent an open letter to the European Commission calling for a European framework to ensure a just transition in the context of the ‘Green Deal’ and the ‘Fit for 55’ package (see EUROPE 12756/16, 12755/1). Addressing European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans, the signatories expressed concern about the lack of initiative for this specific sector, which employs 6% of the total European workforce. While the European Battery Alliance could employ up to 800,000 workers (see other news), they say that the electromobility sector will eliminate many jobs in the combustion engine supply chain. They also remind us that, in addition to the skills needed, the new jobs will not be located in the same place. To view the letter: https://bit.ly/3qUdwHn (PH)
