07/07/2021 (Agence Europe) – Meeting before MEPs on Wednesday 7 July, the Presidents of the European Commission, the EU Council and the European Parliament condemned the attack on Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries, who was shot and wounded in Amsterdam the day before. Dutch MEP Sophie In ‘t Veld (Renew Europe) was the first to speak on the subject, speaking out against “organised crime” and calling on the European Parliament to express its solidarity. Charles Michel made a point of “associating himself with the MEP’s remarks” and denounced an “attack on our fundamental values”. “We have to agree that journalists investigating potential abuses of power are not a threat but an asset to our democracies”, Ursula von der Leyen said. Finally, David Sassoli promised that the European Parliament would “monitor the situation”. (AC)
