European Commission pledges €147 million to help Venezuelan refugees

On Thursday 17 June, the European Commission pledged to support Venezuelans who have fled their country to neighbouring or nearby Latin American countries at the International Donors’ Conference hosted by Austria.

This budget will be distributed as follows: - €82 million in humanitarian aid, notably in the form of equipment to facilitate the reception of medical aid, food and access to education; - €50 million in development aid to facilitate the integration of Venezuelan refugees into host communities and support Venezuelans who remain in the country and are involved in the defence of democracy and human rights; - €15 million from the Foreign Policy Instruments, again to contribute to the integration of refugees into their host communities, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups such as unaccompanied minors, single-parent families, people with chronic diseases and LGBTQI+ people.

The Commission’s assistance is in addition to bilateral support from the Member States and the €319 million already allocated at EU level since 2018 to support Venezuelan refugees.

Since 2015, over 5.6 million Venezuelans have fled the Maduro regime. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
