In a report published on 18 June to mark World Refugee Day, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that record numbers of refugees have been displaced by war.
“Despite the pandemic, the number of people fleeing war, violence, persecution and human rights violations in 2020 increased to almost 82.4 million. This is a “further increase of 4% on top of the already record 79.5 million at the end of 2019”, the UNHCR said. This increase is linked in particular to the crises in Ethiopia, Sudan, Mozambique and Colombia, according to the UNHCR.
At the end of 2020, there were 20.7 million refugees under UNHCR mandate, 5.7 million Palestinian refugees, 3.9 million Venezuelans displaced abroad, and 48 million internally displaced people. Minors under the age of 18 account for 42% of all forcibly displaced persons.
The largest population movements in recent years, and again in 2020, have involved people fleeing from Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar.
In 2020, Turkey was still the country hosting the most refugees in the world (3.7 million), followed by Colombia, Pakistan, Uganda and Germany.
