EU Council adopts its position on future of mobile roaming charges in EU

On Wednesday 16 June, the Council of the EU adopted its position on the continuation and revision of the regulation on roaming on public mobile communications networks within the EU (see EUROPE 12665/9).

In particular, the revised regulation should allow for an adjustment of maximum wholesale prices to make the provision of retail roaming services at domestic prices viable for European operators.

The proposal also introduces new measures to “increase the transparency of value-added services and ensure a good customer experience in terms of quality of service and access to emergency services”, the EU Council said in a statement.

It would be unthinkable for the ‘roam like at home’ principle to end. Today’s swift agreement on the EU Council’s position ensures that we can continue to stay in touch and surf the internet, when travelling in Europe, without incurring additional costs”, said Portuguese Infrastructure Minister Pedro Nuno Santos.

The current regulation, in force since June 2017, will expire on 30 June 2022. The new regulation provides for the extension of the abolition of roaming charges until 2032.
