European Commission gives green light to a European Citizens’ Initiative calling for a ban on fossil fuel advertising

16/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 16 June, the European Commission decided to register the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) ‘Ban Fossil Fuel Advertising and Sponsorships’ as admissible on a purely legal level. As the name suggests, this ECI calls for EU legislation banning the advertising and sponsorship of fossil fuels, all types of fossil fuel vehicles (for transport services of general economic interest) and all fossil fuel companies. For those responsible for this initiative, the ban should apply both online and offline, including in the context of sport, education, science, public events, and third-party media events. At this stage, the Commission has not analysed the substance of the initiative.
