16/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 16 June, ClientEarth and Low Impact Fishers of Europe announced that they had launched legal action against the Dutch authorities “for leaving the door wide open for misreporting of fish catches and overfishing, in direct violation of European legislation”, according to a press release. According to the organisations, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) “regularly fails to check the quantity of fish actually brought ashore”. Every year, large Dutch trawlers bring 400 million kilos of frozen herring, mackerel, and blue whiting onto the EU market. However, the NVWA is reportedly unable to ensure that the fish caught and landed are weighed correctly. Thousands of tonnes of fish could enter the EU market illegally every year. (LC)
