16/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – Titanium dioxide or colouring agent (E171) can no longer be considered safe when used as an additive in animal feed, according to a scientific opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published on Wednesday 16 June. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed could not rule out concerns about the genotoxicity of this substance, i.e. its ability to damage DNA. EFSA’s conclusions follow the opinion published last May that titanium dioxide can no longer be considered safe for use as a food additive (see EUROPE 12715/18). In doing so, EFSA has updated the safety assessment of this additive that it conducted in 2016. See the scientific opinion: https://bit.ly/35pAM6a (AN)
