China slams G7 joint communiqué

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the UK denounced, on Monday 14 June, the communiqué the G7 leaders issued the previous day at the end of their summit.

The spokesperson said that with the communiqué, which “distorted and reversed remarks on Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan and other issues, the G7 deliberately slandered China and arbitrarily interfered in China’s internal affairs”.

The Embassy urged the G7 members to respect the facts, recognise the situation, stop slandering China, stop interfering in its internal affairs, stop harming its interests, and do more things that are “conducive to promoting international cooperation, instead of artificially creating confrontation and friction”.

In their communiqué, while making clear that they will cooperate with Beijing where it is in their mutual interest on common global challenges, the G7 members say they will continue to consult on collective approaches to challenging China’s non-market policies and practices which “undermine the fair and transparent operation of the global economy”. They also call on Beijing to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, especially on Xinjiang, and the rights, freedoms and high degree of autonomy of Hong Kong.

The G7, as well, calls on Russia to end its “destabilising behaviour and malign activities” and to respect its international human rights obligations and commitments.

On Belarus, G7 members pledge that they will work together to hold those responsible for human rights abuses and the Ryanair hijacking to account, “including through imposing sanctions” and to continue to support civil society, independent media and human rights in the country.

The communiqué also looks at Afghanistan, Libya, Ethiopia, the Sahel, Myanmar, the Indo-Pacific region, North Korea, Iraq and Iran.

In addition, the G7 signed an Open Societies Statement with Australia, India, South Africa and South Korea (https://bit.ly/35iIAXw ).
