The European Commission decided on Wednesday 9 June to refer Denmark to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to lift parking restrictions on heavy goods vehicles, which are limited to 25 hours at public rest areas.
The Commission considers that the Danish measure creates obstacles for foreign hauliers engaged in international operations and restricts the freedom to provide services as guaranteed by the EU road transport legislation (1072/2009).
The Commission notes that many hauliers do not have operating centres in Denmark and need to park in order not to contravene EU rules on driving and rest times.
The 25-hour parking limit for HGVs at Danish rest areas was introduced in July 2018. According to the Danish authorities, this measure is intended to combat illegal and dangerous parking. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
