European Commission consults on possible new measures for ecodesign and labelling of phones

On Monday, 31 May, the European Commission launched a public consultation to gather feedback from stakeholders on possible new measures regarding the purchase, use, repair and recycling of mobile phones and tablets.

According to the roadmap published by the Commission, these new measures could take the form of an implementing act and a delegated act complementing the EU Ecodesign Directive (2009/125) and the EU Energy Labelling Regulation (2017/1369), respectively. The aim is to ensure that mobile phones and tablets become more energy efficient and durable, but also easier to repair, upgrade, reuse and recycle.

In force since the end of 2009, the Ecodesign Directive sets minimum requirements for products so as to improve their environmental performance with regard to aspects related to energy consumption, water consumption, emission levels and material efficiency.

As for the Energy Labelling Regulation, it guarantees that the least energy efficient products cannot be placed on the EU market, all the while helping consumers to switch to energy efficient products by providing information through a labelling scheme.

Depending on the outcome of the public consultation, the Commission plans to adopt these new measures in the second quarter of 2022.

The public consultation will close on 23 August 2021.
