31/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – A month-long dialogue was launched on 28 May by the European Commission and the network of national Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) authorities with TikTok, in order to push the Chinese platform to review its commercial practices and policies. This follows a complaint lodged with the Commission in February by the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) against the Chinese platform for unfair commercial practices, failure to protect children and violation of their rights under EU law (see EUROPE 12659/20). These include hidden marketing, aggressive advertising techniques targeting children and certain contractual clauses in TikTok’s policies that could be considered misleading. “The dialogue we are launching today should support TikTok in complying with EU rules to protect consumers”, said EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.
