EU RESPONSE TO COVID-19 / State aid

European Commission validates two Greek and Czech support schemes in context of Covid-19

The European Commission approved on Tuesday 11 May a €500 million Greek support package for food service companies affected by the effects of the coronavirus. The scheme was approved under the Temporary Framework for State Aid.

Greece notified €500 million in aid to restaurants, mobile catering, caterers and other food service activities.

The scheme is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and will be open to companies of all sizes that have experienced a decrease in turnover of more than 30% in 2020, compared to 2019. The aid will take the form of direct grants, each grant amounting to up to 7% of the beneficiary’s annual turnover.

In addition, the green light was given on Monday 10 May for a Czech aid package of €1.9 billion for companies of all sizes in all sectors (except the financial sector).

The support will take the form of direct grants, guarantees, or loans to compensate beneficiaries for expenditures incurred during the period from February 2020 to December 2021.

Eligible companies are those that have experienced a drop in turnover of at least 25-50% during the period under consideration, compared to the same period before the pandemic. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
