11/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – Around 280 gigawatts (GW) of additional renewable energy capacity was installed globally in 2020, an increase of 45% compared to capacity additions during 2019, says a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), published on 11 May. Pointing out that this is the largest increase in over 20 years, the IEA believes that this rate of growth is set to become the “new normal”. The Agency forecasts an added renewable energy generation capacity of about 270 GW in 2021 and almost 280 GW in 2022. The reason: the development of solar (+135 GW in 2020) and wind (+114GW) energy, particularly in China. “Last year’s increase in renewable capacity accounted for 90% of the entire global power sector’s expansion”, commented Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA.
