05/05/2021 (Agence Europe) – A new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) published on Wednesday 5 May shows a “looming mismatch” between countries’ enhanced climate ambitions and the availability of the minerals essential to achieving those ambitions. Indeed, the mineral requirements of a renewable energy system are “profoundly different” from those of a fossil fuel system, the IEA points out. The report states, for example, that an offshore wind power plant requires 13 times more mineral resources than a gas power station of similar size. According to the document, there could be a six-fold increase in the global energy sector needs for minerals by 2040. The IEA therefore calls on governments to act together now to reduce the risks of price volatility and disruptions to the supply. Read the report: https://bit.ly/3o0bgxb (DG)
