European Commission launches public consultation on reform of product promotion policy

The European Commission has launched a public consultation from 31 March to 23 June 2021 on the “review” of the policy to promote European agricultural products inside and outside the EU.

Promotional campaigns for EU agricultural products are designed to open up new market opportunities for EU farmers and the wider food industry, all while helping them to expand their existing businesses.

The consultation, the Commission explains, aims to gather views on how promotion policy can “enhance its contribution towards the promotion of more sustainable production and consumption, and more balanced diets”, in line with the European Commission’s ‘Farm to Fork’ and ‘Biodiversity’ strategies and the Europe Beating Cancer plan.

Several MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture had criticised the forthcoming changes in the EU’s agricultural product promotion policy to the detriment of products deemed less sustainable, such as wine or red meat (see EUROPE 12665/8).
