European Commission report shows stable growth in agri-food trade in 2020

The latest monthly report on agri-food trade, published on Wednesday 31 March by the European Commission, shows stable growth in EU agri-food trade for 2020.

EU agri-food exports reached €184.3 billion (a 1.4% growth over 2019) while imports increased to €122.2 billion (+0.5%), according to the report. The resulting trade balance for 2020 is a surplus of €62 billion, which is 3% higher than in 2019.

China, Switzerland and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region were the main growth destinations for EU agri-food exports in 2020.

In the case of China, the value of exports increased by €3.22 billion over 2019, driven by pork, wheat and infant food.

The value of EU exports fell in relation to the US, Turkey and Singapore.

EU exports to the UK increased by €467 million compared to 2019, with wheat, pasta and pastry being among the leading products. However, the value of EU imports from the UK fell by €1.2 billion, with spirits and liqueurs being particularly hard hit.
