23/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Committee of the Regions (CoR), the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) and the Polish city of Gdańsk announced on Friday 19 March, at the end of the plenary session, the creation of the Mayor Paweł Adamowicz Award, mayor of Gdańsk and CoR member, who was murdered in 2019 (see EUROPE 12172/4). It is a kind of Sakharov Prize, but for those who contribute locally, we are told. The award will most likely be given annually to a municipal leader or organisation that works in partnership with local and regional authorities, fights for freedom and solidarity and against intolerance, oppression and xenophobia. In 2019, the Committee had renamed part of its building after the Mayor of Gdańsk (see EUROPE 12188/31). (PH)
