Before drafting its recommendations on safety of journalists, Commission engages into dialogue with stakeholders

On Tuesday 23 March, the European Commission opened a “European News Media Forum on Safety of Journalists”: two days of online discussions on the impact of the pandemic on journalists, the threats to their physical safety, the dangers they may face online and the recurrent attacks on women journalists and minority journalists in general.

The forum will virtually bring together members of the European Commission, including Vice-President for Values and Transparency Vera Jourová and Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli, MEPs and representatives of European ministries, journalists and their associations, including theInternational Press Institute (IPI) and the European Federation of Journalists.

The three-day exchange should enable the Commission to gather input for its work on the Recommendation to Member States on the safety of journalists that it plans to adopt this year - as it committed to do in its Action Plan for European Democracy (see EUROPE 12615/1).

The EU institution also invites stakeholders to provide written contributions directly to the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect) by 9 April.
