11/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – A coalition of a dozen airlines, aviation companies and environmental NGOs called on the European Commission, on Wednesday 10 March, not to limit the scope of its ReFuelEU Aviation initiative to flights within the European Economic Area. This legislative initiative on sustainable aviation fuels will be presented later this year (see EUROPE 12616/12). In a letter sent, on Wednesday 10 March, to the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, and to the Vice-President in charge of the ‘Green Deal’, Frans Timmermans, the coalition reiterates that long-haul operations are the main source of the sector’s climate impact. It is based, in particular, on recent Eurocontrol figures, which show that only 6% of flights, those over 4,000 km, generate half of aviation’s CO2 emissions.
