In the name of protecting public health and the environment, on Wednesday 10 March, the European Parliament opposed the extension of the EU authorisation of dimoxystrobin, an active ingredient of pesticides with endocrine-disrupting properties, and eight other toxic active ingredients (see EUROPE 12672/14).
The objection to the European Commission’s implementing regulation (EU) 2021/52 was adopted by 472 votes to 214, with 9 abstentions, according to the voting results published on Thursday 11 March.
This also includes active ingredients such as “benfluralin”, “fluazinam”, “flutolanil”, “mecoprop-P”, “mepiquat”, “metiram”, “oxamyl” and “pyraclostrobin”.
Parliament recalls that the authorisation of dimoxystrobin, which was due to expire in 2016, has been extended several times, most recently until the end of 2022, when the precautionary principle should apply, especially for pregnant women, infants, and children.
It is concerned that the Commission justifies each new extension by delays in risk assessment, beyond the control of the applicants, without further explanation.
The Commission is requested to repeal its implementing regulation and present a new draft that considers the scientific evidence on the harmful properties of all the substances concerned, particularly dimoxystrobin, for which a rapid proposal for non-renewal is requested.
