AU and EU call on all Central African actors to work together to finalise electoral process

The political situation and the peace process in the Central African Republic were at the heart of a videoconference, on Tuesday 2 March, between the re-elected president, Faustin-Archange Touadéra, and senior officials from the United Nations, the African Union, the Commission of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the EU.

In a communiqué published on 3 March by the European External Action Service, these organisations call on all Central African actors to accept the results of the elections as proclaimed by the Constitutional Court and to work together to create conditions conducive to the completion of the electoral process within the legal timeframe and in a free, transparent, credible and inclusive manner.

Welcoming the will expressed by President Touadéra in his speech to the nation on 18 January to unite all Central Africans without distinction, as well as his reaching out to the democratic opposition, they stress that this process of open and inclusive political dialogue must contribute to strengthening the representativeness of institutions, confidence, unity and national reconciliation.

It should also help to create conditions conducive to strengthening democracy, good governance, humanitarian access, promoting human rights and enabling the sustainable return of internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugees.

Partner organisations stress the urgent need to revive the peace and reconciliation process. They call on armed groups to stop armed violence immediately. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
