03/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – An evaluation study published on Tuesday 2 March by the European Commission makes recommendations to improve the effectiveness, relevance, coherence and added value of the EU framework on geographical indications (GIs) and traditional specialities guaranteed (TSGs). Among the avenues for improvement envisaged are the control and enforcement of intellectual property rights on the market and at export, communication to consumers and the simplification of procedures. In particular, the study shows that on 1 January 2020, 3,286 names were registered at EU level (858 names from Italy). In 2017, the commercial value of these quality products was estimated at €77.15 billion, with wines representing 51% of the total sales value (€39 billion). This study will help the Commission to formulate its proposals on the revision of this policy. Link to the study: http://bit.ly/3rbAGs9 (LC)
