03/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 3 March, on behalf of the European Union, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service condemned the continuing “violent” repression of peaceful protestors by the Myanmar military and security forces “which has resulted in yet more deaths of innocent civilians”. At least eleven demonstrators have been killed. “Unarmed civilians and medical workers have been shot, constituting clear breaches of international law”, the spokesperson said, adding that hundreds of people had been arrested. He also condemned the increasing crackdown on the media, with a growing number of journalists having been arbitrarily arrested, detained, and charged. “The persecution and intimidation of media workers, who are simply doing their jobs, is unacceptable”, the spokesperson said. He added that there needs to be accountability. (CG)
