10/12/2020 (Agence Europe) – Malta’s implementation of the recommendations from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe concerning the investigation into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, improvements to the rule of law and the end of impunity for high-level corruption has been deemed “unsatisfactory” by the Assembly’s Committee on Legal Affairs. The conclusions are based on the monitoring report (https://bit.ly/3naftx0 ) prepared by Dutch MEP Pieter Omtzigt (EPP) and approved by the Commission on 8 December. The Commission calls on the Maltese authorities to implement “as a matter of urgency” the recommendations contained in a resolution adopted 18 months ago and - with regard to the murder of the journalist - to “refrain from any attempt to impose an arbitrary time-limit on the work of the independent public inquiry currently under way”.
