Navalny case, EU will sanction six individuals and one entity

14/10/2020 (Agence Europe)Member States’ ambassadors to the EU (Coreper) agreed on Wednesday 14 October to sanction six individuals and one entity in connection with the poisoning of Russian political opponent Alexei Navalny, according to an EU source. These names come from a Franco-German proposal (see EUROPE 12576/39). On Monday 12 October, the Foreign Ministers had given their political agreement for such measures (see EUROPE 12579/2). The persons and entity sanctioned will be added to the EU’s regime of restrictive measures against the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. This regime has just been extended until 16 October 2021 (see EUROPE 12579/29). The legal acts related to this decision of new sanctions should be published this Thursday 15 October. (CG)
