Pandemic continues to have impact on level of asylum claims being filed

14/10/2020 (Agence Europe)The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) confirmed on Wednesday 14 October in a new publication (https://bit.ly/350Hqzv ), that the restrictive measures related to Covid-19 have continued to have an impact on asylum applications in the EU, which thus decreased slightly in August compared to July (almost 43,000 applications) and remain well below pre-pandemic levels. In January 2020, 65,692 applications were registered, with a total of 295,075 having been registered since the beginning of 2020, a decrease of 31% compared to the same period in 2019. In August, Syrians (5,394 - 13% of the total) and Afghans (3,800 - 10% of the total) continued to be the nationalities filing the largest number of applications, followed by Venezuelans (3,600 - 9% of the total) and Colombians (3,300 - 7% of the total).
