More EU citizens from North prioritise the environment and more citizens from South prioritise economic recovery

12/10/2020 (Agence Europe)More EU citizens prioritise the environment over economic recovery, but more citizens in southern countries are prioritising recovery, according to a FoE/YouGov poll of 10,500 citizens in 11 countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Sweden and Denmark), which was published on 12 October. Nearly half (49%) of citizens surveyed want the EU make environmental protection and a sustainable future a matter of priority, compared to 43% who want the EU to help post-Covid economic recovery. The North/South divide is vast, however: 65–66% of respondents in Spain, Greece and Portugal and 58% in Italy said they wanted the EU to prioritise economic recovery, compared to around a quarter of Germans (28%), Swedes (26%) and Danes (25%).
