12/10/2020 (Agence Europe) – In Luxembourg on Monday 12 October, the European Ministers for Foreign Affairs discussed strategic relations between the European Union and Latin America, which together represent one third of the votes at the United Nations. They discussed the controversial EU/Mercosur agreement (see EUROPE 12578/18 and 12575/16), which, according to Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, is “much more than a trade agreement”, and offered “support” to their Latin American counterparts in their efforts to tackle their economic and environmental challenges, particularly with regard to protecting the Amazon basin. This discussion took place on 12 October, the day Spain commemorates Hispanic Day and Christopher Columbus’s discovery of America. Borrell pointed out, however, that the choice of date for the discussion was a coincidence. (MB)
