25/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – Around 50 MEPs from the European Parliament’s LGBTI Intergroup wrote on Tuesday 22 September to representatives of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), denouncing the holding of the upcoming European Games in the Malopolska region of Poland. “We are extremely concerned that one of the locations chosen for this exercise in 2023 is a region that declared itself ‘free of LGBTI ideology’”, (see EUROPE 12530/19), wrote the MEPs. In particular, they are disappointed that the EOC agreed to hold an event in an area where any LGBTI athlete or participant may find themselves exposed to discrimination. Referring to a recent resolution adopted by the European Parliament on this subject (see EUROPE 12393/13), MEPs also noted that “LGBTI-phobia at sporting events remains common” and that “measures to combat it are lacking”.
