09/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 9 September, High Representative of the Union Josep Borrell, strongly condemned the bomb attack on the convoy of Afghan First Vice President Amrullah Saleh (see EUROPE 12306/17), who is known for his hospitality towards the Taliban, expressing his full support for Afghanistan’s democratic institutions. The attack, which left at least 6 people dead and 12 injured, “follows many other unacceptable attacks on members of parliament, peace activists, journalists and religious leaders”, said Borrell. “Those who seek to weaken the peace process by indiscriminately targeting and hurting officials and civilians in breach of international law, will not prevail and will have to bear responsibility for their acts”, he warned. The attack came at a point when the Afghan Government and the Taliban might open negotiations (see EUROPE 12554/18). (CG)
