29/07/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 29 July, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service condemned the attack that took place the previous day on the seat of Afghan vice-presidential candidate Amrullah Saleh, during which at least 20 people were killed and 25 injured, including Mr Saleh; it took place on the first day of the official campaign for the upcoming presidential elections. "This is a direct attack on democracy, which (...) goes against the letter and spirit of the resolution of the intra-Afghan dialogue" of early July “where Afghan representatives, including the Taliban, agreed on the need to avoid civilian objectives and to reduce the number of civilian casualties to zero”, he denounced. He emphasised the EU's support for the vast majority of Afghans who want free and fair elections and a free debate. (CG)
