The number of requests for access to documents amounted to 6,912 in 2018, an increase of 9.5% compared to 2017. This comes from the report published by the European Commission on Monday 29 July on the application in 2018 of Regulation 1049/2001 regarding public access to European Parliament, Council of the EU and Commission documents.
The Commission issued 7,257 initial responses to these requests for documents, compared to 6,716 in 2017, representing an increase of almost 7.5%.
Statistics show that the documents requested were fully or partially disclosed in more than 80% of the 6,912 requests in the initial phase and that wider or even full access was granted in almost 41% of the 288 cases examined in the confirmatory phase. "The data confirm not only the openness of the Commission, but also the importance of the right of access to documents as part of the institution's general policy on transparency", the report states.
The Commission recalls that it has "increasingly faced a new and widespread problem of transparency, namely online disinformation". That is why the institution is committed, with all stakeholders, to defining a comprehensive action plan to combat its spread.
