After being delayed several times, the Pact on Asylum and Migration could finally be presented on 30 September, after the European Summit on Turkey on 24 and 25 September, several sources told EUROPE.
The Commission is reportedly therefore determined to publish this set of new rules on asylum and migration at the end of this month, initially planned for the spring and then in June, having first envisaged 23 September.
The subject of the timetable is not insignificant: after the delay linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, which redefined the work priorities in the spring, the Commission had envisaged the month of June, before considering that the EU27 could not concentrate before the summer on anything other than the search for an agreement on the Recovery Plan, finally reached on 21 July.
If this timetable is observed, there could be a first presentation of this work at the October Home Affairs Council. Contacted by EUROPE, the Commission did not wish to confirm this date of presentation.
The subject is eminently sensitive and, according to a diplomatic source, the blockages between Member countries on the balance between responsibility (of the countries of first entry) and solidarity (notably via the apportionment of migrants and asylum seekers) were not overcome during the summer.
