07/09/2020 (Agence Europe) – According to information gathered by EUROPE, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will officially announce the European Union’s new 2030 target for the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) in her State of the Union address to the European Parliament on Wednesday 16 September. While doubts persist, it is likely that this target will be a reduction of at least 55% (compared to 1990 emission levels). This announcement will be accompanied by amendments to include this new objective in the ‘climate law’, which is currently in the hands of the European legislature. This week, MEPs could argue for a more ambitious target (see EUROPE 12553/7). The ‘Renovation Wave’ initiative (see EUROPE 12484/16), the strategies for methane emissions (see EUROPE 12545/1) and offshore renewable energy (EUROPE 12533/14), and the fifth report on the state of the Energy Union are due to be presented on 14 October.
