EU and euro area unemployment up in June

30/07/2020 (Agence Europe)According to the latest figures released by Eurostat on Thursday 30 July, compared to May 2020, there were 281,000 more unemployed in the EU, including 203,000 in the euro area, in June, the month when Covid-19 containment measures began to be removed. In June, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the euro area was 7.8%, compared to 7.7% the previous month. For the EU, the rate was 7.1%, compared to 7.0% in May. The unemployment rate for under-25s in June was 16.8% in the EU and 17% in the euro area, compared to 16.2% and 16.5% respectively in May. Eurostat estimates that 15.023 million men and women in the EU were unemployed in June, of which 12.685 million are in the euro area. (CG)
