On Thursday 30 July, the European Commission launched a public consultation on the Interregional Investment and Innovation Initiative (I3) with a view to the upcoming programming period. It will remain open until 30 September of this year.
The objective, or so the institution explains in its press release, is to sound out citizens and other stakeholders, both nationally and regionally (public authorities, higher education institutions, civil society organisations, etc.), with a view to preparing and developing this new instrument, in particular with a view to identifying priority areas for investment, links to EU priorities, delivery mechanisms, types of support, investment needs in the face of market failures, and investment readiness.
As a reminder, one of the aims of this new initiative is to speed up innovation, to enable research to be transferred to specific applications, to better mobilise public/private investors while reducing the risks associated with private investment, and to take advantage of the impact of EU funding. In particular, it will target well-developed ecosystems by focusing on weaknesses in particular value chains and by targeting the least developed regions.
