Commission launches consultation on needs of EU postal sector

The European Commission announced, on Tuesday 14 July, the launch of a public consultation on the postal services directive. Objective: to assess the impact of the directive in its current form and the needs of the postal sector.

The public consultation on the directive, which was last revised in 2008 (see EUROPE 9568/19, 9690/11), will be an opportunity to assess how the postal market has contributed to the objectives of economic and social cohesion, consumer protection, innovation and market integration, the institution explains.

It is open to all: citizens, businesses that use postal services, postal operators, social partners and public authorities, says the European Commission, until 9 November 2020. On the basis of the reactions received (and additional studies), the Commission intends to adopt an evaluation of the postal services directive in 2021.

In Europe, the sector generates €90 billion a year, or 0.52% of the Union’s GDP, and employs around 1.8 million people. The sector has undergone a profound transformation with the digital boom and has proved its cardinal importance for the European economy during the Covid-19 pandemic, the institution recalls.
