14/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – The Czech government will support an amendment to the country’s constitution to recognise the right to defend oneself with a firearm, according to the online newspaper Euractiv in an article published on Tuesday 14 July. This comes as a positive response to a petition with more than 100,000 signatures aimed at thwarting the implementation of the Firearms Directive. The Czech Republic has always been critical of this directive, which reinforces the process for the acquisition and possession of firearms after the attacks on the Bataclan in Paris in 2015 (see EUROPE 11774/26). Prague had tried - unsuccessfully - to have this legislation annulled by the Court of Justice of the EU, finding it contrary to the principles of proportionality and legal certainty (see EUROPE 12234/8, 12382/22).
