The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), together with several European trade union representations (IndustriAll, ETF, EFBWW, EFFAT, UNI Europa), sent a letter on Wednesday 22 April to the Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, in which they call for the transposition of the Posting of Workers Directive deadline of 30 July to be maintained.
They denounce Business Europe’s request to postpone this deadline (see EUROPE 12469/34) on the grounds that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a heavy impact on SMEs and businesses in general. For trade unions, this date has long been known to employers, since the Directive was adopted in the summer of 2018. Postponing the entry into force of the Directive would send the “wrong signal”, according to the trade unions, at a time when the health crisis shows the need to guarantee the highest social standards and protection of workers.
