22/04/2020 (Agence Europe) – While the COVID-19 health crisis has highlighted the shortcomings of European insurance systems, the French government is currently working on the creation of a pandemic insurance scheme. On Wednesday 22 April, the French Ministry of the Economy and Finance announced the creation of a working group on this issue, bringing together insurers, parliamentarians, and senators. It will be responsible for defining a framework offering insurance coverage for these exceptional risks, in order to enable economic players to cope with a drop in turnover and to continue their activities under the best possible conditions, Bercy explained in a press release. As it does not have the characteristics of a natural disaster, pandemic risk is difficult to insure, according to insurance companies, and is poorly covered by traditional insurance schemes. The working group is due to submit its proposals in early June. (MF)
