The allocation of €130 million in European support for the civil transition in Sudan and for the country’s most vulnerable populations was announced during EU High Representative Josep Borrell’s official visit to the country (Saturday 29 February-Sunday 1 March) - the first since he took office. The High Representative visited Khartoum and Darfur following the meeting of the AU and European Commissions in Addis Ababa (see EUROPE 12434/23).
In Khartoum, Mr Borrell confirmed the support to Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and to the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.
“The European Union will continue to play an active role in supporting and consolidating the political transition in Sudan, to accompany the country on its path of political and economic reforms and to continue to support the Sudanese people in their quest for democracy, peace and stability. I have met many young people who were at the origin of the revolution, and they are impatient to see the peace dividends”, said Mr Borrell in a statement issued by the European External Action Service on Sunday evening.
The €100 million will enable the Sudanese civilian authorities to meet the most urgent needs for the democratic transition and to boost their efforts to implement reforms. This assistance will focus mainly on support for economic reforms, opportunities for young people and women, the peace process and democratic governance.
The €30 million emergency aid package will fund the most pressing needs of vulnerable populations - food and nutritional aid, shelter, emergency health care, access to clean water and access to education for children. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
