02/03/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Monday 2 March that it would provide €5.1 million in funding for a series of European projects aimed at promoting media freedom and pluralism. A “key objective” of the Action Plan for Democracy (see EUROPE 12429/4) promised by the European Commission, stressed Vera Jourova, Vice-President of the institution responsible for values and transparency. Among the projects that will benefit from this funding, the European Commission notes the establishment of a cross-border fund for investigative journalism and a pan-European mechanism aimed at preventing violations of freedom of expression and the provision of practical assistance to journalists under threat. In addition, the funds allocated to the Media Pluralism Monitor project—implemented by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Freedom (CMPF)—will be renewed for one year. (AC)
